Officials say the situation worsened after India released water from several dams into Pakistan at a time when heavy monsoon rains had already swelled river flows.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Rescue 1122 confirmed that more than 32,500

people have been shifted to safer areas, while the Pakistan Army has been deployed across eight districts to assist with rescue and relief operations.

Climate and sustainable development expert Masood Lohar called the situation “unusual and dangerous”, stressing that Punjab has not seen such a disaster in decades.

He warned that the overflowing eastern rivers — Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas — combined with the swollen Chenab could cause devastation in Lahore, Bahawalpur, Sialkot, and Kasur. Lohar further cautioned that:

  • A 690,000 cusecs flood wave is passing through Marala Headworks on Chenab.

  • The Ravi River could surge from 170,000 to 250,000 cusecs at Jassar.

  • The Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala is already at exceptionally high flood levels.

Authorities are warning residents in Shahdara, Park View, and Motorway-II to prepare for possible inundation. Citizens are advised to keep emergency kits ready, secure important documents, and use the NDMA Disaster Alert mobile app for real-time updates.

While the eastern rivers remain at critical levels, the Indus River at Chashma, Taunsa, Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri is currently at a low flood stage, providing some relief for Sindh.
